You guessed it, September!!!
Why? Well, Back To School, of course! Yes, all our little ones and big ones are back to another fun-filled, hard-working school year, and that means as parents we need to get back into a regular work-routine too.
I have one girl and 3 boys. My youngest, 5 years old, just started Kindergarten this year. I never thought I would love the sound of silence so much.
So, what are we going to do about it? What do we do first, second? So much time now. As Mother's, we are all used to having so much to do, and multi-tasking, most of us probably never asked ourselves, what am I going to do now?
Well, the first thing I am going to do, is get my Mindset in a Good Foundation. Huh? Sounds like a foreign language doesn't it? It's pretty simple actually, and I will share with you my Secret 5 Steps right here, Today!
Step 1-Getting My Day Started
Let me ask you first an interesting question. How many of you brushed your teeth, dressed, grabbed a coffee, looked at yourself in the mirror, Before.....getting the kids up and dressed, their teeth brushed and faces washed, food in their stomachs, bags on the back and lunch box in hand, and out the door to the bus on time?
Well, I can speak for myself. When I return from the bus stop on my corner, I look in the mirror, and it's like I'd been in a cyclone.
The point is, first things first-Take Care of Yourself. Take the proper time every morning, to be clean, to dress comfortably, and to Eat, and nourishing breakfast. Eating is so important. We feed our children to nourish their little brains for school, and we need to be well nourished for a full-filling productive work day too.
Well, now that you feel content, relaxed, and ready to go, what's next?
Step 2-How's My Attitude?
Am I already starting to feel anxious? Is my mind flooded with all the tasks at hand? Am I even having self-defeating thoughts like, "How am I going to do this?", or "What if I can't get enough done today before the children return home?"
Attitude is very important, and crucial, if a joyful, relaxing atmosphere in your home-business each and every day is going to be maintained.
What works for each person will vary, but I can share what works for me, and you can try it too, if you like.
I start by reading something positive and inspirational. It could be a poem, an article you found somewhere, a few pages of a book. Many small, 365-day, "Daily Reflection" books have been written, to give an individual a paragraph or so of an idea or positive experience, to encourage self-reflection and meditation.
Step 3-Am I Organized?
Now that the Body and Mind have been given some attention, how about your physical space?
I am sure most of us are aware that a clean, organized and clutter-free environment in and around our homes is important to us. It not only provides good health, but makes us feel positive and motivated about ourselves and others.
I am not talking about a home equal to a "palace", or "a museum". We may have dishes to wash, some laundry to do, a floor to mop. We're mothers-our role as engineered home-makers and wives, is a very unique and special role. It's the only job I ever had, that I can say I am never finished doing at the end of a day.
I am talking about The Office. Yes, Our Personal Work Space. Take a minute, look around your working space that you will spend 20-40 hrs. a week sitting, or standing at. Is there clutter? Is there dishes, wrappers, garbage around? Are there unnecessary items taking up space, or causing your eyes or your mind distraction? Is there light- natural sun or a lamp? Do you have all the tools necessary to do your job well, at a fingertips reach? Finally, what kind of pictures, messages, or sayings do have posted up on the wall or on your desk around you to encourage and motivate you to stay positive, and energized?
Remember, our "Input" is our "Output"-If our Environment is clean, organized, comfortable, and positive, we will reflect this in our business relationships, and in our business itself.
Step 4-Making A Schedule-It is Really Necessary?
It is really a personal choice to many. I think it is absolutely necessary. As Human Beings, Intelligently Created and with Free Will, our own history has proven that we need and use schedules for everything we do, every day. We use a calendar year to mark the years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds of our lives. We use a 24-hour clock to mark each day to give ourselves a beginning and an end of our activities. In fact, even nature itself, has it's own schedules and cycles, that give us such a comfortable, stimulating and enjoyable home on our "earth". For example, consider some of these natural cycles-the Moon, the Tides, the Air, the Water, the Ocean Currents, the Sun, our Orbital Planets, our Galaxy. Not to mention even the Animals, Birds, and Insects that Instinctively Migrate and Reproduce each year on an Exact cycle or Schedule.
Why do we, as intelligent, thinking, free-will beings above all creation on the earth, think we can function well enough with efficiency and success in our lives and business without A Schedule?
My own personal experience as a mother and wife has taught me over the years that having a schedule of daily goals, a list of short-term and long-term goals, even a calendar agenda, keeps me free of much of the chaos and added stress, I might otherwise experience. It gives me and each family member Stability, Consistency, Harmony, and Success in my Family and my Business.
One last thing-Don't be anxious over How To Do It, Just Do It! Some of us like paper. Some of us like notebooks and calendars to write in with ink or highlighters. Some of us much prefer our computer programs, phones, and other electronic devices to make a schedule and keep track of our activities and events. Whatever method(s) you choose, just be sure it suits you, and the rest will follow.
Step 5-Balance!
I believe balance has a lot to do with our Personality, not just our schedule. This requires a bit of self-reflection. Am I a Perfectionist? Am I Methodical? Am I Proactive? Am I a Procrastinator? Am I Insecure? What do I Value?-My Health? Excercise? Good Food? Relaxation? Fun? Education? What do I think and feel about Myself? What about my Imperfect Body and Mind?-Do I struggle with Health issues? Do I have a Disease, or Syndrome? Do I suffer from Depression or Mental Illness?
Being Consistent about our business at hand, and our daily responsibilities, requires commitment and seriousness. We are all pretty good at that, in fact many of us don't know when to stop.
I have personally found that achieving Balance of both worlds, Business & Family Responsibilities Versus Personal Time, Health & Fun are not only Challenging, but very necessary for Happiness, Self-Worth, Personal Development, and Success in all areas of life.
Here is a Sample Schedule, I have created to achieve Balance each day, for a 7-Day Week.
6:30 am-Wake-up children for school.
7:15 am-All children and husband off to their respective places, time to get started on my day. Personal Hygiene, Breakfast, and A Moment of Daily Reflection.
8:00 am-Time to Open Computer and Get Business Rolling.
10:00 am-Healthy Snack, Water or Fruit Juice, and a Brisk Walk or Bike Ride.
10:30 am-Back to Business.
12:30 pm-Lunch, Personal Fun Activity or Book Reading, and A Short Nap.
1:30 pm-Back to Business.
2:45 pm-Children start Arriving Home. Unfortunately, I must stop Business for several hours. (I Love My Business, my work, my job, whatever you might call it yourself.) I really am sad to leave it for awhile, often for the rest of that day. I realize at this point, I am in the Minority, while the Majority of those can't wait to Run Fast From The J-O-B, Each Day.
3:00 pm-8:00 pm-My Family, My Home, My Husband, Now these all need My Time, Energy and Attention.
8:00 pm, 9:00 pm, and 10:00 pm-Some Nights of my week, 2 or 3, might require a little extra of my Business time to Attend a Webinar, or an Online Training Session. My Family is very Gracious, Understanding, and Supportive of these occasional evening, when a little extra effort and sacrifice for my business is required.
Well, that's Monday to Friday, but what about the Week-end?
My Week-ends are for My Family. It's generally a mix of spending quality time together, having fun, learning new things, shopping, and relaxation. However, I am careful, not to suddenly get caught up in Business on the week-end. The most I do, is keep my e-mail box free of clutter, and only respond to an e-mail if it requires immediate attention like registering for a future webinar, or answering an important question briefly for a client or colleague. This in itself should only take 15-20 minutes, perhaps in the morning after breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday.
Get used to not getting "hooked in" to some pressing matter on the week-end that could result in spending precious family time doing business, and cause disappointments with your family members. It causes a lot of guilt too!
Running a Home-Based Business requires A Strong Desire to Succeed, and Self-Discipline. It is also very Enjoyable, & Satisfying-And Hey, not to mention Making Some Money too!
So, everyone, on that note, let's get out there, and get a Fantastic Start to another Great Year!!!
